Band 6: The Internet has dramatically altered our lives over the past few decades. Although some of these changes have been negative, the overall effect of this technology has been positive. What are your opinions on this? (User-Written IELTS Writing Task 2 Essay)

In the past few decades access to the internet has greatly changed our lives. Although some aspects of this change have been negative, internet has been helpful in most cases. I agree with this statement because web access has given us the most knowledge in human history while also providing new career paths, but there are some disadvantages to internet.

On the one hand, I believe that access to internet has been one of the great achievements in human history because the knowledge and jobs that it has created. To begin with, many people work remotely from their home because of the internet. This can be both beneficial for companies because they can spend less resources for their workers, and people can work easily in comfort of their home. Furthermore, internet has nearly all the knowledge of human history at a click so people can benefit from it and people are smarter than ever due to this reason. For instance, Wikipedia is a site with information about nearly any subject ranging from history to science.

On the other hand, I also believe there are some negative aspects to online activity that should be fixed. Firstly, even tough people are closer together than ever because of the internet, they spend more time on their digital devices than they spend interacting with each other. Therefore, depression rate has skyrocketed more than ever in the history. Secondly, these changes have also made individuals careless towards online security because many people trust unauthorized websites, and give personal information without any attention. Consequently, internet has indirectly caused many information to be leaked by hackers. For example, Facebook is in a lawsuit with US government due to leaked information of more than 2 million people.

In conclusion, I agree that the internet has been one the most helpful tools for individuals because human awareness is more than ever and many occupations now depend on it. However, although it has been helpful, loneliness compiled with security breaches are two of the most important reasons as to why online access can be a negative technology in some aspects.
