The issue of working from home is a new phenomenon in the contemporary world after the COVID-19 pandemic; however, it is often debatable, as the matter has both pros and cons regarding the work environment in the modern landscape. While many organizations have already adapted to the concept of a home office in their operations, as their employees can do their office work staying at home instead of attending the office, this essay will explore both the benefits and challenges of the increasing trend of home offices.
Although there are a number of advantages to working from home, two major ones—cost efficiency and environmental sustainability—are paramount to companies for better efficiency. First of all, even after the COVID period, some companies have continued to allow a majority of their workers to work from home. The prime rationale for keeping this strategy running is the lower cost involved by adopting this policy, leading to lower operating expenses as administrative expenses such as office rent, fuel costs, and utility costs decrease significantly. Thus, companies’ profitability increases to a large extent. Additionally, a home office policy supports environmental sustainability. As fewer people are required to work in the office, there is limited employee congregation in the office, leading to lower carbon emissions by the employees as well as a smaller carbon footprint due to lower energy consumption, such as less air conditioning and electricity use.
However, home office cultures are not without their limitations. One disadvantage of working from home is that some jobs require direct intervention in physical group settings. For instance, mechanical engineering work toward the invention of a new type of machinery needs combined group work by a number of scientists who work physically as a team. Another disadvantage of a work-from-home setup is that top executives do not have proper surveillance over their subordinates, as some fellow workers may dodge work at home. Therefore, this could have a detrimental impact on a company’s output.
All in all, the growing trend of allowing working from home by many corporations may be beneficial in certain aspects, as it can have a considerable positive impact on the companies’ cost savings, and it also helps promote environmental sustainability by encouraging green office operations. However, for some jobs that require direct supervision and a team setting approach, a physical office concept is preferable to home office practices.
