There is ongoing debate about the most effective way to reduce crime. Some people argue that extending prison sentences is an effective solution, whereas others believe that alternative approaches could produce better results.
Supporters of longer prison sentences believe that strict punishment prevents people from committing crimes. The fear of being locked-up for many years may act as a warning for those who consider breaking the law. In addition, long prison terms help remove dangerous individuals from society, especially those who repeatedly commit serious crimes. For instance, If a person who has committed armed robbery is given a long sentence, they are unable to harm others during that time. People in favour of this view argue that justice must be strong in order to maintain stability and safety.
On the other hand, many people argue that punishment alone does not solve the problem of crime. They believe that most criminals come from poor environments where they had little access to education, jobs or mental health care. If these issues are not addressed, the same people may return to crime after they are released. For this reason, rehabilitation programs, skill training, and psychological support can help them build a better future.
In my opinion prison sentences are crucial and should remain the main form of punishment for criminals. If people break the law especially in serious cases they must face strong consequences. Without strict penalties like prison, many individuals would not take the law seriously. Punishment must be clear and firm to protect society and show that unlawful actions will not be tolerated.
Ultimately, despite this value of educational and psychological support,I maintain that firm prison sentences are the most reliable method to discourage crime and protect the community.
