It is claimed that the media should be free to publish whatever they want. I completely disagree with this view for three main reasons.
One major drawback of allowing the media to publish any information they wish is the publication of inappropriate content. The younger generation might follow the media and may receive inappropriate content. It can have a negative influence on the behaviour of young people. For example, if news websites repeatedly publish violent or aggressive content, some young people may become desensitised to violence and start viewing such behaviour as normal. As a result, watching inappropriate content may negatively influence the behaviour of young people, and they might start to view such behaviour as normal.
The second issue is that allowing the media to publish any information they wish is the publication of fake news. The media might publish false information to attract an audience. It can also create misleading opinions among people. For instance, a media outlet may publish false information about a disease, causing people to misunderstand health risks. Therefore, receiving false information might create unnecessary concerns among people, which may lead to unnecessary stress and anxiety.
Another reason why the media should not have complete freedom is that some information can cause problems in society if it is published without proper consideration. For example, publishing unverified information about a serious event may cause people to panic or make decisions based on incomplete information. Therefore, some basic rules are necessary to make sure that information shared with the public is reliable and appropriate.
In conclusion, allowing the media to publish any information they wish might lead to severe disadvantages such as unnecessary concerns and misleading public opinions among people.
