Band 7+: The most important reason for a young person to attend a university is to increase the amount of money that he or she will eam in the future. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Some students nowadays regard attending universities only as a way to increase their future revenue. However,I don’t share the view that the most essential reason for young people to attend university is to get higher income in the future.

There are quite a lot important reasons why getting higher income in the future is not the most important reason to attend universities.Firstly, considering getting higher income as the most significant reason is out of the essence of education.Being educated,a young person is expected to be a better citizen,to take responsibilities and make contributions for themselves, for the society, and for human beings. That’s nothing similar with just expecting to earn more and get success.Secondly, the value behind the opinion is utilitarianism, which is not quite suitable for young people’s development.Taking earning more in the future as the most important reason to attend a university means you will consider everything you plan to take part in as quantitative, calculating whether it is helpful to your future career, instead of take part in various activities just out of interest or passion.

Furthermore, there are additional reasons why increasing future income is not the main reason to attend university. This will cause mental problems and a crisis of value of young students ,as the real important reason for attending universities is to form ego.Students holding this opinion will be excellent sheep, following the rules to be perfect but not knowing why to do so,as William Deresiewicz mentioned in his book, since depression has become the most common problems students nowadays face, outweighing drug abuse and accidental pregnancy. Therefore, the really essential reason for young people to attend universities is to find themselves,to get guidance from their professors and really find the career that they have the passion to devoted themselves on,whether it is well-paid or not.

In conclusion, getting higher income in the future is absolutely not the most essential reason for young people to attend university because that reason has negative effects on student’s well-being,and a young person should consider the most significant reason as finding himself or herself.
