The utilisation of social and media networking has become a widespread phenomenon among the world. It is said to have a plethora of benefits and drawbacks which will be discussed in this essay. However, it is my firm conviction that the positives far outweigh the negatives.
To begin with, social media has allowed simple and speedy communication between people all across the world. A survey done from a local university showed that 1 out of every 2 international students have owed platforms such as Instagram and Facebook for dispersing feelings of homesickness and allowing them to connect and converse with fellow students around campus with ease. Although, there may be fake profiles on such apps that could perhaps trick vulnerable students into airing out personal information, such mishaps can be avoided by authenticating the existence of the person and not talking to complete strangers.
To add to, social media can be a creative outlet for people to express themselves by posting and sharing things that they are passionate about. For example, world renowned pianist Alex Tremblay started off his career by posting small snippets of him playing the piano on social networks. These videos started trending, which furthermore lead him to his exposure among peers and finally, success. However, sharing such things may cause you to be subject to bullying and hateful comments, which may lower self-esteem and confidence. Turning off comments from your posts or reporting them to the authorities can prevent such behaviour.
In conclusion, usage of media networking has many merits which overcome the obstacles that come with it. The latter can be solved with certain measures.
