Band 9: The working week should be shorter and workers should have a longer weekend. DO you agree or disagree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

In contemporary society, there is a prevalent belief that the current weekly working hours for employees are excessively long, necessitating a reduction to allow for increased weekend rest. I wholeheartedly endorse this perspective, and this essay will elaborate on my viewpoint in detail.

Firstly, reducing the working week offers a pivotal advantage in enhancing job efficiency. In today’s era, workloads have intensified, compelling employees to endure extended hours each week to fulfill their duties. This strain contributes significantly to various health and mental issues, including stress, breakdowns, and depression, thereby diminishing their productivity. Hence, decreasing weekly working hours enables employees to allocate more time to recuperate, engage with their families and friends, and rejuvenate their spirits. Consequently, they can approach their tasks with heightened efficiency and vigor, free from stress and fatigue.

Moreover, this reduction affords employees the autonomy to choose whether to undertake additional work. Many individuals occasionally seek extra hours to meet financial obligations, yet excessive administrative demands often preclude them from pursuing such opportunities. By curtailing administrative burdens, employees desiring supplementary tasks can pursue them without compromising their essential rest periods. For instance, in Vietnam, many officers aspire to augment their income through additional shifts, but the current six-day workweek, laden with employer expectations and pressures, deprives them of relaxation time. Reducing their weekly workload to five days would afford them crucial time for personal needs and reflection.

In conclusion, shortening the weekly work schedule confers numerous benefits upon employees and their professional endeavors. It grants them the invaluable opportunity to recuperate fully, thereby bolstering job performance and satisfaction. Moreover, it empowers individuals by providing flexibility in pursuing supplementary work opportunities. This combination of enhanced well-being and increased autonomy underscores the imperative for reforms aimed at achieving a more balanced work-life paradigm.
