Some people argue that work weeks should be shorter because workers need longer weekends. While I agree with this idea, I think several factors should be taken into account before implementing this approach.
I believe there are various benefits to shorter work weeks, mainly that workers would have more opportunities to spend time with their families or friends, leading to a better quality of life and family ties. Moreover, with the advent of artificial intelligence technology, and the possibility of automating many labor-intensive activities, having workers stay longer at offices or factories might be seen as redundant. For example, many companies are now able to use machines to facilitate the workload of most of their workers, so it seems rational to decrease their working hours as a part of this advancement. Furthermore, from a psychological perspective, longer weekends would enhance workers’ ability to concentrate on their tasks, resulting in better performances and more efficiency.
However, I believe that this approach comes with certain caveats that should be addressed by governments or companies. Firstly, due to the global shortage of medical experts, decreasing their working hours might not yet be practical and could lead to undesirable consequences. Therefore, governments should invest more in training more medical staff in order to mitigate the problems that might arise from a shorter working week in hospitals. Secondly, longer weekends and more opportunities for idleness, although might benefit an individual in the short-term, if prolonged might lead to laziness; thus, as a way to address this issue, companies should obligate workers to engage in physical and mental exercises in their free time. Finally, since some companies might try to increase their daily working hours in order to shorten their working week, workers might become overworked during the day and develop serious health problems, which is not ideal.
In conclusion, while I agree that workers should have longer weekends, I believe various problems could arise from implementing this approach that should be addressed by governments or companies in charge.
