There is a prevailing belief that emergence of new technologies has reduced criminal activity. Personally, I wholeheartedly align with this point of view. This essay will present several arguments to demonstrate that decrease in criminal rate is directly connected with technology as its features enable governments to find offenders momentarily and provide individual with opportunity to earn money legally.
First and foremost, it is essential to mention that in the last century, many crimes could not be solved due to a lack of evidence as there was not a technology for data recording. However, nowadays, situation has changed dramatically. Relatively recent inventions such as video surveillance system using artificial intelligence, DNA analysis, fingerprints databases, wiretapping technologies, etc., are being implemented by police departments almost everywhere. These technologies significantly ease the process of investigation making potential and actual criminals easy targets. The fear of being detected almost effortlessly makes offenders realize all risks and live by the low. For instance, in Moscow, the system called ‘Smart city’ using AI cameras to track the actions of citizens decreases crime rate annually.
Furthermore, it is known that crimes are most often committed due to poverty, as stealing is the only option for desperate people to make ends meet. Fortunately, modern technologies provide people from different backgrounds with opportunities to have endless job prospects in the new fields. The invention of the Internet has contributed to the emergence of the work possibilities especially in IT sector for almost everyone even for those who have criminal background. This is happening because the Internet provides users with access to free information, courses, books, making individual learn a new profession without leaving home. The only things needed are gadget, stable connection, and desire to change life. That is why I believe that such technology as Internet has decreased the levels of crime noticeably.
In conclusion, I hold the firm belief that technology is one of the most effective tools in fighting crime, as it enables people to implement its functions into safety issues by changing violators’ attitude towards impunity and provides job facilities for those whose main income is connected with crime.
