Currently in many nations the youth do not talk with elderly people as they used to in the past. This essay will discuss key factors why this is taking place and gestures that can improve communication between youth and older people.
One reason why adolescents do not communicate with seniors is that adolescent’s free time in a day is limited. Nowadays the younger generation have very busy schedules and responsibilities that they need to attend to everyday. Secondly, there is a substantial technological gap. The youth are constantly evolving with the newest technology and keeping up to date with all the changes happening. Old people might judge younger people on their appearance. The youth can feel emotional when being insulted by seniors. Lastly, there are differences in daily interests. The younger generation uses social media to follow different interests like fashion trends, music or podcasts, while older people have more traditional interests.
On the other hand, one solution can be to teach older people how to operate technological devises. Younger people must take time to teach elderly citizens how use technology in their everyday lives. Additionally, more social gatherings can be arranged. Volunteer to spend time playing card games or bingo with older people at a retirement village. Using clear language is also very important. Using slang or abbreviations when talking to an elderly person will cause a language barrier and misunderstandings. Lastly, show empathy during visits with senior citizens. Adolescents need to show patience and respect to older citizen when they face difficultly hearing or repeating a story.
