Band 6+: Today many people do not know their neighbours in large cities. What problems does this cause? What can be done about this.

In bigger cities, it is very common for people to not recognize their neighbors. This essay will first suggest that this practice can lead to social isolation and also pose risks to the individuals, and then argue that taking initiation to make acquaintance with people in the locality and cultivating the habits of seeking help are the most viable solutions.

Firstly, if people do not know others living in the same society, they will not have anyone to talk to or bond with, especially during the social functions and community gatherings. This creates an akward and difficult situation to participate in such events; as a result of which, one tends to skip such programs. Despite being surrounded by people, one feels isolated and alone. Secondly, people constantly feel threats of being victim to crimes such as theft or robbery. Such people are vulnerable because there would be no one to help them during the time of difficulties. Conversely, if people have friendly relationship with people of the surrounding area, neighbors tend to monitor their vehicles or units when they are away.

To mitigate these problems, the initial solution involves building healthy relationship with the neighbors. People should greet each other every time they meet or take certain steps; for example, inviting each other for birthdays and other occasions to foster the social relationship. In addition, people living in the same area or house should not hesitate to ask for help with each other. It is a human nature, to feel acknowledged or trustworthy, when other people approach them with a request. For instance, if you are going on a vacation, you can go to your neighbors with a box of sweet, and humbly request them to look after your property while you are away.

In conclusion, thinking neighbors as some random strangers can lead to serious problems of being alone and being at risk to crimes. To ensure a lively relation, one should treat neighbors as their own family. The local government can frequently organize events, which allows people to socialize with each other.
