It has been argued that schools should incentivize students to grow as decent citizens rather than to pursue personal goals. I do not agree with this viewpoint and this essay will justify why schools should help children to develop their moral values as well as to garner individual achievements.
On the one hand, I believe schools play a crucial role in instilling values and morals in young generations, which should lay the foundation of their sustainable growth afterwards. Specifically, various educational programs and extra-curricular activities will foster a sense of solidarity, respect and empathy among students as well as enhance their problem-solving abilities. By teaching not only academic subjects but also moral lessons, schools enable them to acquire both comprehensive knowledge and personality traits that can greatly contribute to social progress in the long run. These educational institutions can also provide role models and ideal examples of respectful behavior and civilized responses to different situations in life.
Nonetheless, from my perspective, students should be equipped with personal skills and assets to succeed in life. The key rationale behind this is that the growth of society heavily relies on individuals’ development. Their knowledge and abilities will both boost a nation’s economic prosperity and facilitate social well-being. Hence, without schools’ assistance, students may struggle to fare and help others to growth with them due to lack of capacity and self-esteem. Another reason why schools should motivate young individuals to pursue their own interests is that they need to to grow independently. If schools cannot offer students necessary resources to thrive by themselves, they may fail to achieve their own targets, which can create a lasting negative impact on their confidence and belief. Consequently, they may become reliant on others and will burden the government with their insufficient capacity to lead a decent life.
To sum up, in my view, even though schools should take responsibilities for educating children about moral and civic values, they should also drive students to follow their passions and achieve personal success. If both purposes are guaranteed in education, this should result in students’ sustainable and comprehensive growth.
