Band 9: Urbanization has become one of the common features of economic development in the world. What are the causes and effects of this trend?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Urban sprawl is one of the most prominent aspects of economic advancement in today’s world. This phenomenon is driven by multiple factors and presents various challenges.

There are several reasons for the extension of cities. Chief among these is the migration of people from rural to urban areas. This relocation is fueled by the allure of better employment, education, and healthcare facilities in these regions. For example, a young person from a small village might move to a city to attend a university or find a job unavailable in their hometown. This influx of people contributes to the haphazard growth of cities, as urban areas struggle to accommodate the increasing population. Another cause is the global trend of urbanization. As countries develop, there is a shift from agriculture-based economies to those focused on industry and services, which are usually concentrated in cities. This transition attracts people to urban centers. Additionally, a lack of proper planning is also a contributor to messy and unplanned development. This is often due to insufficient resources, governance issues, or simply because the city is growing faster than planning can manage.

This urban expansion gives rise to a number of problems. Firstly, it often results in inadequate infrastructure. Specifically, cities might face issues with basic amenities like transportation, housing, and waste management. For instance, people moving to urban areas often struggle to find affordable housing, contributing to poor living conditions. Furthermore, urbanization also leads to environmental issues such as the loss of green spaces, rising pollution, and changes in climate patterns. As countries grow, so does the number of vehicles, leading to traffic congestion and increased air and noise pollution. This not only affects the environment but also has health implications for the city population. Nonetheless, urban growth positively impacts the economy. It plays a crucial role in attracting investment, boosting economic development. Cities will become more appealing to both domestic and foreign investors due to their concentration of resources, talent, and essential services.

In conclusion, the growth of cities stems from a confluence of factors and has both positive and negative effects on such areas. Addressing these issues necessitates comprehensive urban planning to ensure that cities evolve in a sustainable manner for the well-being of their inhabitants.
