It is widely recognized that finding out about family history has become one of the highly controversial topics that attract people’s attention in this day and age. While this has admittedly certain benefits, I would argue that they are overshadowed by the drawbacks.
On the one hand, researching our family trees is somewhat advantageous. One key advantage is when we research our original point, we can understand deeply about ourselves. For example, when we casually find out that our ancestors were suffragettes who fought for women’s rights, we can instill a sense of empowerment. The failure and triumphs of our ancestors can motivate us to try our best and foster our ability.
On the other hand, I am convinced that the aforementioned merits pale in comparison to the demerits of researching family history. One major problem is that it can create negative feelings such as anger, anxiety and sadness. When we unearth uncomfortable truths of our previous generations like family conflicts or tragedies, it can cause emotional damage that takes a lot of time to process and get over. This is compounded by the fact that investigating our family history takes a great amount of time, dedication and money. We need to hire professional researchers, access genealogical databases to discover our original point and it requires a lot of financial investment, Therefore, we may incur financial burden and unmanageable debts.
In conclusion, although figuring out our ancestors can bring certain benefits, I would contend that its drawbacks are far more significant.
