Band 7+: With the rapid advancement of communication technology: smart phones, tablets and other mobile devices, some people believe that the disadvantages outweigh the advantages. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

In recent years, it has been believed by some that the proliferation of communication technology such as smartphones, tablets and other mobile gadgets brings more demerits over positive outcomes. This essay is going to argue for why it partly agree with such a statement.

To begin with, it is undeniable that technological communication innovations bring certain extreme shortcomings. One of the most prominent reasons is that youngsters tend to spend most of their time on online platforms, leading to sedentary lifestyle and health issues. In light of

insufficient parental guidance, youngsters are easily addicted to online content and have littile time to engage in outdoor activities. As a result, it can lead to not only obesity and poor eyesight but also poorer academic performance. For example, many students nowadays allocate significant time to scroll social media without participating adequate physical activities. Therefore, it can create a higher risk of suffering from health diseases such as diabetes and affecting their academic peformance. Another salient explanation is excessive screen time in older generations, which is a precursor to family dysfunction. As family members spend considerable amount of time on virtual connections and online interactions, it may deprive them of valuable family time. Consequently, face-to-face interactions become less frequent, making it harder for family members to understand one another’s thoughts and feelings. This lack of mutual understanding can eventually lead to conflicts and in worst cases, divorce.

Despite the aformentioned reasons, there are more compelling reasons supporting why this inclination has its merits outweigh its disadvantages. First and foremost, citizens can effectively maintain connections with their friends and relatives regardless of geographical barriers and time constraints thanks to technological advancements. To be more specific, we can make free-of-charge phone calls and instant messages to our beloved people from all over the world, so it can provide us with a way to keep in touch with friends as well as breaking the ice with new acquaintances without worrying about geographical distances. Furthermore, individuals can easily keep up with the latest news and novel information in their countries and across the globe, thereby enhancing their global knowledge and personal vigilance. As the world nowadays is teeming with unprecedented fluctuations in politics, economic and medical concerns, citizens can be well-informed about climate changes, wars and contagious diseases.

In conclusion, this essay has demonstrated that despite having significant benefits, the rise in communication technology also brings certain downsides. Therefore, it is recommended that individuals should make the most of the advantages offered by technological progress while minimising its drawbacks.
