Band 8+: With the rapid advancement of communication technology: smart phones, tablets and other mobile devices, some people believe that the disadvantages outweigh the advantages. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

In today’s fast-paced digital age, the issue of whether communication technologies, such as mobile phones and tablets, bring more negative impacts than positive benefits has become increasingly contentious. Despite this dilemma, I firmly believe that the advantages of using technology outweigh the disadvantages, which would be examined in the forthcoming paragraphs.

There are a number of reasons to say that cellular devices play a pivotal role in our daily life. To begin with, it enables individuals to stay connected with friends, family, and relatives regardless of geographical distance. Social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and WhatsApp provide convenient and instant communication. For example, people who have relocated for work or study can connect with their loved ones through video calls and messaging. Secondly, from an educational perspective, mobile phones play a vital role in education. For instance, during the COVID-19 pandemic, when institutions were closed due to lockdowns, students who didn’t have computers at home still continued their studies with the help of their smartphones.

Another point to consider is that people can get the latest information on both domestic and international news through mobile phones. For getting this information, they don’t have to rely solely on traditional news media like TV and newspapers. This has become especially valuable during global crises or emergencies when timely updates are crucial. For example, during natural disasters, different news portals provide real-time updates, live feeds, and instant notifications, allowing people to stay informed about affected areas and relief efforts.

However, it is important to acknowledge that mobile phones may create certain problems in an individual’s life. Mobile devices emit radiofrequency radiation, which may damage brain cells and which could be a reason for brain cancer. Additionally, there is a rise in technical problems such as hacking, where hackers can steal personal information and misuse it. For instance, hackers sometimes call individuals asking for OTPs (one-time passwords). If people fall into their trap, they risk losing their bank balances.

To conclude, although cellular phones create numerous difficulties, they have assisted us in many ways. Having considered both sides of the issue, I would argue that a balanced approach—where mobile phone usage and personal life are integrated in a healthy way—would likely yield the best results.
