Hosting an international event is a topic of ongoing debate. Some people think it brings economic growth, tourism, and global recognition, benefiting the host country significantly. In contrast, critics argue that the financial burden and potential environmental concerns outweigh the benefits.
Nowadays, Every nation wants to be a host for popular sports tournaments such as the football world cup, Olympics, cricket World Cup, etc. The hosting nation can produce money and fame in various ways such as allowing local brands to sponsor the event, attracting more tourists during the game period, allowing native artists to perform for a grand ceremony, etc. For instance, Russian artists performed at the opening ceremony of the 2018 FIFA World Cup. It was a great opportunity for the artists to grab the spotlight, knowing that millions of people were watching them.
On the other side, Some critics believe that hosting such an event is hectic and unnecessary. Sometimes, the approach taken by a country is immoral and dangerous. For example, Qatar was hosting the 2022 FIFA World Cup, and while it seemed normal in the beginning for the host nation to be excited about the preparation. However, thousands of labour workers died due to heat and malfunction of the construction tools. Moreover, Qatar authorities denied taking any responsibility for this tragic incident. Some of the critics even labelled it as a “Horror of Qatar”.
In my opinion, The number of nations praised for successfully hosting international events outweighs the number of nations that fail to do so. Hosting a big event is a responsibility and not an opportunity. If done carefully, It can provide numerous advantages for the citizens.
