Issues related to peer pressure are frequently discussed these days. It is undeniable that young people can be influenced by their peers in terms of their personalities and life circumstances. In this essay, both the positive and negative impacts of peer pressure will be examined, before concluding with my opinion, which strongly supports the view that the disadvantages outweigh the advantages.
On the one hand, there are some positive aspects associated with peer pressure. One significant impact is motivation, particularly in encouraging young people to try new experiences. When young individuals observe their friends achieving success, they are often inspired to work hard to achieve similar accomplishments. This can lead them to improve their lives, provided they use the pressure as motivation and avoid feelings of envy.
On the other hand, I would argue that the disadvantages of peer pressure outweigh the advantages. The main reason for this is that toxic pressure can lead to negative self-perception, resulting in poor mental health. A clear example of this is a case reported by Thairath News in Thailand, where a 15-year-old student at a local high school committed suicide. The student left a letter explaining that he felt worthless after comparing his life to his classmates. This tragic event illustrates the severe and harmful effects of peer pressure when young people are unable to manage it effectively.
In conclusion, while there are some positive aspects to peer pressure, I believe that the disadvantages are far more significant. To minimize these negative effects, it is important for governments and educational institutions to work together to educate young people about the importance of valuing themselves and avoiding harmful comparisons with others, while still maintaining healthy motivation.
