The issue of whether a museum should always be free for people to visit, whatever the visitors’ age, income or nationality, is widely debated these days. Many people are in favor of making museums free. However, I feel that free entry would bring many disadvantages to museums, and I will explain the reasons here.
Firstly, almost all museum tickets have a good price for domestic visitors and also foreigners. In other words, they are not hard for people to afford. Further, if people want to contemplate the artwork, they have to buy the tickets because these help museums maintain their facilities inside and outside. This is important because of the large number of visitors. Finally, although museums in some developed countries can survive without ticket fees, since they receive money from supporters and the government, museums in developing countries must pay for themselves. Ticket fees are essential to do this.
Of course, those who think that museums should be open for free are quite correct because a museum is a symbol of one country and almost all visitors from other countries want to come and see works of art. Further, beside famous museums, there are a few other museums which are open without fees such as “Love”, “2024” and “VietNam peacefully” in Thao Dien district from VietNam.
However, “Love” and the other museums are very small and most larger museums in developing countries cannot survive without ticket sales. For these reasons, I firmly disagree that country’s museums should be free for everybody.
