Band 8+: Some people believe that governments should focus on domestic issues, while others argue that global problems should be a priority. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

People hold different opinions about governments’ priorities when it comes to addressing issues. While some believe that challenges within a country should be the main area of focus, others maintain that global concerns are of the highest importance. I contend, however, hitting the balance is imperative in this regard for two primary reasons: First, some countries simply cannot pivot their attention from inner problems; second, neglecting nations’ own issues might bring about crises.

To commence, a county’s overall development depends largely on resolving internal issues. Many nations around the world struggle with a low standard of living and high crime rates. Given that raising public awareness is one of the key methods of tackling global challenges, a stable environment is essential. Citizens of such countries often live in chaos and dissatisfaction, making it difficult—if not impossible—for them to engage with global problems. Therefore, the basic necessities of a peaceful life, such as adequate income and public safety, must be ensured before introducing global concerns.

On the other hand, global issues, such as environmental degradation and global warming, are the main problems of our modern era. It is widely acknowledged that these concerns might lead to catastrophic consequences if overlooked and require international effort to resolve. Moreover, many global challenges have direct effects on individual nations, making it short-sighted to neglect them. For instance, environmental issues such as rising sea levels or climate change can destroy infrastructure and displace populations, even in countries that contribute little to such issues. As no country can remain unaffected, cooperative global action is needed. Hence, addressing such problems should be a priority, particularly for wealthier or more stable nations with the resources to lead such counteractions.

The aforementioned factors are apparent arguments why balance is a key. Nations with internal issues simply are not able to participate intensively in organizations to alleviate global concerns, or they run the risk of escalating those problems if they do. However, nations with relatively stable economies and social lives must arrange international groups or implement new laws; otherwise, global issues might get escalated beyond the level to reverse.

To conclude, although both have their merits—focus on domestic issues for overall development and on global issues to prevent global effects on every nation—I maintain that a country should reach a certain level of stability before being engaged in coordinated efforts to handle the issues around the globe.

Research indicates that the characteristics we are born with have much more influence on our personality and development than any experiences we may have in our life. Which do you consider to be the major influence? Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Whether human personality and development are primarily determined by genetic inheritance or lifetime experience remains a widely debated topic among psychologists and sociologists. While biological traits establish a foundational baseline, I strongly believe that environmental factors and personal experience ultimately exert a more effect on an individual’s character and growth. Proponents of biological determinism argue […]

Is it possible to pay somebody to do things you don't want to do or you don't have the time to do? For example, household chores or looking after children. Is this a good way of providing work for others? Should people do these things themselves? So, is this a direct question or discuss both views?

Nowadays it is likeable that people can hire workers who can do some kinds of chores such as housework, purchasing groceries, and daily child care. While some do not see it as a great job opportunity, I strongly believe that, in today’s world, finding proper work is hard and these opportunities can be considered as […]

In some countries today, there is an attitude that 'anyone can do it' in the arts- music, literature, acting, art, etc. As a result, people with no talent become rich and famous and genuine talent is not valued or appreciated. Do you agree or disagree?

Arts such as paintings can be expressed in a variety of forms. It is widely argued that art is only for those who have innate talent and wealthy members of society. However, I totally disagree with this statement. I see the reason why people associate paintings with wealth and talent since most of the paintings […]
