Band 5: In most universities students focus on specialised subjects, however, some people believe that universities should encourage students to study a wider variety of subjects. To what extent do you agree or disagree? (Please write at least 250 words) (User-Written IELTS Writing Task 2 Essay)

It’s undeiably true that many university stuents choose to focus more on specialized subjects and there are many famous universities that supported specializations such as the London School of Economics (LSE) and Massachusets Institute of Technology (MIT). But would it be better if the students are encouraged to study a wider variety of subjects beyond their discipline? I will give my opinion of this argument on this essay.

Let us agree that learning more than 1 or 2 skills can bring benefits to our lives and this certainly applies to university students as well. In the end, after graduating from university and earning a diploma, students will move on to pursue their career, this is where elective subjects might be useful. For example, an electrical engineering student might have thoughts about his degree unable to help him find a job related to his expertise, but at least he can start a business with the knowledge he obtained from the elective classes he took like the principles of macroecononomics and principles of financing.

However, not all students experience this kind of situation, because there are some university students that choose to focus entirely on the depth of their specialized subject and avoid unrelated elective subjects. By putting their maximum effort on the subject and eventually reaching masters or doctorate, hence they don’t need to worry about academical or industrial work in the future, due to their wider knowledge and experience compared to average undergraduate students.

To end this essay, I think both arguments present themselves in a strong and unshaken manner, although i think that it would be better for college students to explorre more beyond their specialization, because just like life, we will always encounter many events that we enjoy or not.
