The line graph illustrates the Netherlands’ escalation in traffic of various transportations during the period of 1950 – 2000.
Overall, all types of traffic including cars, trains, bicycles and other mass transportation increased from the initial year. However, automobile traffic was skyrocketing over the whole period.
Number of cars used to commute in the Netherlands rose up slightly to 20% in 1960 and continued increasing with a significantly greater slope uniformly throughout 1960 – 1980, eventually reaching 100%. The growth then slacken between 1980 and 2000. At the end of 2000, automobile traffic had increased by 140% in total, remaining as the type of transportation with highest growth.
Netherland’s traffic for cars, trains and other public transportations also expanded as well but with a less steep gradient. By far in 2000, trains had the second highest increase in traffic at 20%, followed by bicycles at roughly around 17%, then other mass transportation, being placed last with just above the half of 20%.
