Back in school, when I was, I believe, 13 years old, I was sitting in a literature class. My English literature teacher was teaching us a poem, "The Seven Ages of Man" from Shakespeare's play, *As You Like It*. The line that I really loved was, "All the world's a stage, and all the men and women merely players." This line basically depicts that men move through different stages of life. As they grow, they take on different masks, reflecting their changing capabilities and the roles they play within their circumstances. There are seven stages: starting with infancy, the child is helpless and dependent. Then, they grow and go to school, carrying their books and eager to make friends. As they mature, they become lovers, experiencing the passion of adolescence. Later, they become soldiers, working hard to earn a reputation. The next stage is that of a justice, where maturity and wisdom are their armor. This stage is serious and responsible. Then comes the pantaloon stage, around the age of 60, where vulnerability sets in. The individual becomes weary of the world and its burdens. Finally, in the last stage, beyond 60 or 70, the individual returns to a state akin to infancy, an old man behaving like a young child. This poem is a clear depiction of the human journey from birth to death. It's a powerful portrayal that I feel deeply whenever I read it.
