One natural disaster that I have learned about in great detail is that Silat flood of 2022. It was one of the most devastating floods in the history of Bangladesh, especially for the people living in Silat and Sunamganju region. Since Silat is my hometown, my family had to face this disaster directly. The flood was caused by continuous heavy rainfall in both Silat and upstream regions of India. As a result, rivers like Surma and Kushira rose rapidly and overflowed it. Within a very short time, large areas of Silat city and the surrounding districts were submerged. What made this disaster even more personal for me was the situation my family went through. Our neighborhood was completely flooded and water entered our house up to knee level. My parents had difficulty cooking, collecting drinking water and even moving from one place to another. For several days electricity was cut off and many people had to depend on candles and stored food. I remember them constantly because I was extremely worried. Seeing my hometown suffer was emotionally very painful. Thousands of families lost their homes and were forced to move flat shelters. Transportation was completely disrupted. Although it was heartbreaking, I was inspired by how the community came together. Volunteers, rescue teams and local organizations worked timelessly To help them in the flood, we realized how vulnerable our region is to natural disasters. It also taught me that importance of sustainable river management, proper drainage system and early warning strategies. Overall, learning about the select flood was an eye-opening experience for me and it reminded that climate change is making natural disasters more frequent and more severe.
