Firstly, the business model of news has changed completely. In the past, major networks aimed to attract a broad audience to maximize advertising revenue. But today, with the rise of cable news and online platforms, it's often more profitable to target a specific audience. Social media have realized that partisan commentary generates much stronger engagement and more money than just dry, objective reporting. Secondly, social media play a huge role. Platforms like TikTok are designed to show you content that aligns perfectly with your habits. These platforms know what you really want to know. This is called the Information Cocoon. This rewards emotionally extreme content because it gets more likes, shares, and comments. As a result, even neutral stories and news get framed in a sensational way, which people then perceive as biased against their own side.
