Well, I believe that cultural and societal norms place a significant role in shaping how punishment is viewed and applied. In some cultures, strict punishment, excessive punishment, like corporal punishment or long-present sentences are seen as necessary to maintain order. They believe that this aligns with values and beliefs. However, in others, there is a bigger focus on rehabilitation and second chances. They see as fear and justice is equal. For example, some countries emphasize free integration for criminals while others tend to have harsher sentencing laws. Social values, religion and history also influence what is considered fear punishment. And I want to say in the end, it is what one society sees as reasonable discipline, another might view as too extreme.
