The line graph presents data on the fluctuation in average carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions percentage from 1967 to 2007.
Overall, there was a consistent upward trend in average CO2 emissions, particularly notable in Sweden. Initially, the United Kingdom ranked as the highest emitter, succeeded by Italy and Portugal, which saw increases from 7.5 to 9 and 5 to 7.5 metric tons respectively.
In terms of increases, Italy exhibited a rising trend from 1967 to 1977, while Portugal showed a recovery despite starting as the lowest emitter. Portugal’s emissions surged from approximately 1 to nearly 3.5 over two decades, and then further increased to 5 between 1987 and 1997. Italy experienced a modest rise from 6.5 to 7.5 and maintained stability until 2007.
Conversely, the United Kingdom and Sweden displayed distinct patterns. The UK witnessed a significant decline from 11 to 9 between 1967 and 2007. Meanwhile, Sweden’s emissions increased from 9 to 10.5 by 1977, but then sharply dropped to just over 7 between 1977 and 1987, followed by a minor decrease to 5.5 over the subsequent three decades.
