Band 8+: Many people think that public transport should be free for all citizens, while others believe it is too costly. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

There is considerable debate over whether public transport should be free for all citizens. While some believe that making public transport free would benefit society, I firmly disagree because it would impose a financial burden on taxpayers and reduce the quality of services.

To begin with, one of the strongest reasons why I oppose making public transport free is that it would place a significant financial burden on taxpayers. This is because the cost of maintaining and operating public transport systems would need to be covered by government funds, which are typically generated from taxes. For example, in cities like London, public transport is subsidized by taxes, but the financial strain can be overwhelming. As a result, this could lead to higher taxes and reduced public spending in other important areas like education or healthcare.

Furthermore, another key factor supporting my stance is the potential decrease in service quality. This is particularly important because when public transport systems are funded entirely by the government, there is less incentive for efficiency and improvement. A clear example is the over-crowding in free or heavily subsidized transport systems in some cities, where the lack of funding leads to poor services. Therefore, making public transport free could lead to a decline in the overall experience for passengers.

In conclusion, I strongly believe that public transport should not be free for all citizens, as it would place a financial strain on taxpayers and reduce the quality of services. Ultimately, this proves that a balance between affordable prices and service efficiency is crucial for maintaining a high-quality public transport system.
