However, they do not seem to solve the problem. This essay will discuss why problems with solid waste are currently getting worse and how the authorities should address them.
Before, goods were packaged in sizes of either 8s, 10s, or bulk sizes. Candy products like ‘Mentos’ used this kind of packaging scheme. However, due to issues of hygiene and convenience, companies were pushed to refine their products, having them individually packaged. This product refinement did not only mean excessively higher costs for companies but also meant more waste products generated.
Another significant factor worth mentioning is the rise of single-use products from tableware to fast fashion to various cheap low-quality toys and merchandise. In addition, the popularization of food delivery platforms makes it easier for people to buy anything. With purchases from these platforms increasing, more trash means more disposable tableware and plastic bags.
Therefore, government officials need to find solutions. In Taiwan, authorities mandated the use of designated trash bags. These bags come in different sizes specific to different garbage types. Not only do they decrease garbage disposal, but they also increase tax revenue. Personally, I think other governments should adopt this scheme. In addition, they should also step up public awareness efforts about waste management online. I believe advocating awareness campaigns through 10-second unskippable ads can help.
In conclusion, the advent of convenience and portability without government regulation could lead to more refuse than usual. However, when stricter rules are imposed, we not only help ourselves become responsible but we also help protect the environment.
