This post contains ideas and band-9 sample answers (audio included) for the Cambridge IELTS 10 Academic Speaking Part 1 Question 4 Test 1 question:
“How important do you think it is to have free time at the weekends? [Why?]”
Sample 1: Important
I think it’s incredibly vital to have leisure time during the weekend. It’s a time to bond with family and friends. In our fast-paced lives, we often miss out on these precious moments during weekdays. Weekends are like the silver lining, where we can create lasting memories with our loved ones.
Sample 2: Important
I reckon that leisure time at the weekend is quite significant. It’s an excellent period for mental refreshment. After five days of hard work and continuous focus, a break is much needed to relax the mind and prepare for the coming week. Reading a good book or just enjoying the silence can work wonders.
Sample 3: Important
To me, having free time on the weekends is absolutely crucial. It gives us the chance to rekindle our interests and passions that might have taken a backseat during the hectic weekdays. This not only rejuvenates us but also instills a sense of fulfillment and happiness.
Sample 4: Important
I firmly believe that leisure time, particularly on weekends, is paramount. This is when we can escape the ordinary routine and set off on little adventures. There’s something quite refreshing about visiting new locations, trying unique cuisines, and immersing ourselves in diverse cultures. It fosters a spirit of curiosity and broadens our perspectives.
Sample 5: Not Important
I personally don’t think it’s critical to have downtime on weekends. I use this period for personal development, learning new skills, or enhancing existing ones. It’s an ideal time to make strides toward becoming a better version of myself. The satisfaction I get from this cannot be achieved through mere relaxation.
Sample 6: Not Important
For me, having leisure hours during the weekends does not hold much significance. I’m a workaholic by nature and I derive pleasure from immersing myself in my job. The sense of accomplishment I receive from ticking off tasks on my to-do list is incomparable. So, the idea of idleness during weekends doesn’t resonate with me.
Sample 7: Not Important
For folks blessed with affluence, the luxury of leisure time during weekends can be a welcomed option. They have the financial freedom to indulge in non-work activities without concern. However, for me, the situation is somewhat different. I am currently in a stage of life where I am striving to reach my financial goals, and every hour I can work counts. So, a weekend of relaxation is less of a priority.
Sample 8: Not Important
Weekends are often seen as a time to disconnect and unwind from the stresses of the working week. However, in my case, I don’t feel the need for such a break. I am fortunate to be in a profession I am passionate about, so working or engaging in professional activities during weekends feels more fulfilling than draining.
Sample 9: It Depends
Personally, as a professional, I believe the importance of leisure during the weekends is subjective and hinges on individual preferences and obligations. Some people may find it crucial to decompress and rejuvenate, while others might leverage this time to catch up on pending tasks or pursue side hustles. After all, it’s about striking a balance that suits one’s lifestyle.
Sample 10: It Depends
From a student’s standpoint, the need for leisure time during weekends can be quite debatable. While some students might feel the need to unwind and relax, others might see it as an opportunity to get ahead in their studies or extracurricular activities. Thus, the importance of downtime is not a one-size-fits-all concept.
