This post contains ideas and band-9 sample answers (audio included) for the Cambridge IELTS 9 Academic Speaking Part 1 Question 1 Test 1 question:
“What games are popular in your country? [Why?]”
Sample 1: Playing games
You know, there’s been a surge in games that encourage physical activity. Games like Pokémon Go, for instance, have gained popularity due to their unique blend of technology and fitness. The game promotes outdoor exploration and exercise, making it a hit among health-conscious individuals. It’s a case of fun meeting fitness, and it’s really caught on!
Sample 2: Playing games
Mobile games, especially ones like “Candy Crush” and “PUBG Mobile”, have a massive fan base in my country. The primary reason for their popularity lies in their accessibility. With a smartphone, people can play these games anywhere, anytime. Bus commute, lunch break, or waiting for a friend – these games fill the gaps and keep boredom at bay.
Sample 3: Playing games
In my country, football (or soccer, as some call it) is a sport that draws a massive following. It’s not just a game, it’s an integral part of our culture. The thrill of the match, the camaraderie among fans, and the excitement that fills the air during a game – it’s quite a spectacle!
Sample 4: Playing games
Online quiz games have gained considerable traction in my country. I believe this is largely due to the sense of intellectual accomplishment they offer. Participants take pleasure in testing their knowledge, learning new information, and challenging their friends. The thrill of beating your own or others’ high scores adds to the excitement.
Sample 5: Playing games
Role-playing games (RPGs), like “Dungeons and Dragons”, have a dedicated following in my country. These games offer players the chance to escape into fantastical worlds and live out exciting adventures. The appeal is in the creative freedom and immersive storytelling, allowing players to momentarily step away from reality. It’s a form of escapism that many find captivating.
Sample 6: Not playing games
My country is very much into battle royale games like Call of Duty and Apex Legends. But, rather than immersing myself in these, I find intellectual pursuits more stimulating. I am fond of activities like solving complex math problems or indulging in thought-provoking discussions. They enhance my cognitive abilities and keep me mentally sharp.
Sample 7: Not playing games
Back home, Minecraft and Roblox are quite beloved by children and adults alike. But interestingly, I don’t partake in these games. I have always been an art enthusiast, enjoying activities like painting, music, or creative writing. These art forms give me a sense of accomplishment and allow me to express my feelings in a way games simply cannot.
Sample 8: Not playing games
In our country, online multiplayer games, including PUBG and Fortnite, have a massive following. But, to be frank, I don’t devote any of my time to them. Instead, I am passionate about maintaining an active lifestyle. I find hiking, swimming, or even a simple jog to be much more invigorating and rewarding than digital games.
Sample 9: Not playing games
Honestly, I’m more of a workaholic and I barely have time to play games or even know about them. I believe there are some popular games in my country, but I’m just not the right person to discuss them. I spend most of my time focusing on my career and personal development.
Sample 10: Not playing games
Although I’m sure there are games that are popular in my country, I have always believed in investing my time in activities that contribute to personal growth and knowledge. Not to devalue games or those who enjoy them, but I have always been more inclined towards activities that align with my personal values and interests.
