This post contains ideas and band-9 sample answers (audio included) for the Cambridge IELTS 14 Academic Speaking Part 1 Question 3 Test 3 question:
“Do you think you are a good neighbour? [Why/why not?]”
Sample 1: Yes
Undoubtedly, I consider myself a considerate and amicable neighbour. I believe in fostering a sense of camaraderie among those who live nearby, so I strive to create a harmonious atmosphere by being respectful of their privacy and maintaining the cleanliness of our shared spaces. Additionally, I am always happy to lend a hand when someone needs assistance, which I think demonstrates my good neighbourly qualities.
Sample 2: Yes
Yes, I would say that I am a responsible and courteous neighbour. One reason for this is my commitment to adhering to the community guidelines, such as being mindful of noise levels and promptly disposing of waste. Moreover, I make a conscious effort to engage with my neighbours in a cordial manner and participate in local events, thus promoting a sense of unity within our neighbourhood.
Sample 3: Yes
I firmly believe that I am a good neighbour due to my proactive approach in fostering positive relationships with those in my vicinity. I regularly organise social gatherings and initiate conversations with my neighbours, which helps to break down barriers and create an inclusive environment. In addition to this, I always ensure that I am respectful of their personal space and support any community initiatives that benefit us collectively.
Sample 4: Yes
Indeed, I perceive myself as a commendable neighbour, primarily because of my genuine concern for the well-being of those around me. I make it a point to be vigilant about the safety of our neighbourhood and promptly report any suspicious activities to the local authorities. Furthermore, I am environmentally conscious and actively participate in community clean-up events, which contributes to the overall betterment of our shared living space.
Sample 5: No
To be honest, I don’t think I’m a particularly good neighbour. The primary reason is my rather hectic and unpredictable schedule, which often leads to me returning home late at night. As a result, I might inadvertently make noise when I’m trying to carry out my day-to-day activities. I understand that this can be quite disruptive for my neighbours, who might be trying to rest or sleep at that time.
Sample 6: No
Regrettably, I must admit that I’m not the most ideal neighbour. My somewhat introverted nature makes it difficult for me to initiate conversations or establish strong connections with those who live nearby. Consequently, I may come across as distant and unapproachable, which could hinder the development of close-knit relationships within our neighbourhood.
Sample 7: No
I would hesitate to describe myself as a good neighbour, primarily due to my occasional lack of consideration for shared spaces. Despite my best intentions, I sometimes forget to promptly remove my trash or adhere to designated quiet hours. I acknowledge that these oversights can be disruptive to others, and I am working on improving my attentiveness to such matters.
Sample 8: No
In all fairness, I can’t claim to be a model neighbour. My sporadic travels and frequent absences from home make it difficult for me to participate in neighbourhood initiatives or lend a helping hand when needed. Consequently, I might be seen as an unreliable or uninvolved member of the community, which could understandably give others a less-than-favourable impression of me.
Sample 9: It Depends
I believe my status as a good neighbour is somewhat contingent on the personal preferences of those who live near me. For example, some individuals might appreciate my efforts to maintain a tidy and well-kept property, which contributes to the overall aesthetic of the neighbourhood. On the other hand, my tendency to be more reserved and private might be interpreted as standoffish by neighbours who prefer a more sociable atmosphere.
Sample 10: It Depends
Assessing my status as a good neighbour can be quite nuanced, as it encompasses a range of factors. I am diligent when it comes to adhering to neighbourhood rules and regulations, ensuring that I do not create any disturbances or cause inconvenience to others. Nonetheless, my demanding work commitments might impede me from actively partaking in community events, which could be perceived as disinterest or detachment from the neighbourhood.
