Overall, it can be observed that the figure rose remarkably over the period shown. People aged 18-24 were more greatly involved in gyms than those who were older. Interestingly, there is a noticeable pattern that suggests the higher the age group, the less physical activity involved among Europeans.
The proportion of Europeans engaging in gyms was similar in percentage, ranging from 5% to 10%. In 1994, the figure for all age groups increased steadily. Then, in 1998, people aged 18-24 and 25-34 who went to gyms increased sharply, both reaching 30% respectively.
In 2002, the trend for people aged 18-24 experienced a drastic increase, reaching roughly 50%, whereas people who were 45 and over remained stable, at 10%. After 2006, people aged 18-24 peaked at 58%. In 2010, the most physically active group was aged 18-24. Other age groups such as 25-34, 35-44, and 45 and over also showed a steady increase throughout the period shown.
