Answers & Explanations Summary
| # | Answer | Evidence | Explanation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Q21 | D | Just say you have no opinion; what's the problem with that | Excerpt/Transcript Explanation: The transcript shows Joshua asking Ethan why it would be a problem to simply state that he has no opinion, meaning Joshua thinks it is totally fine to do so. Answer Explanation: The answer choice D means that it is completely fine to write that you do not have any thoughts or feelings about something. Reason For Correctness: The correct answer is D because when Ethan mentions that he does not have much of an opinion, Joshua tells him, "Just say you have no opinion; what's the problem with that?" Joshua's question shows that he thinks there is no issue with doing this, which means he believes "it is alright to say that you don't have an opinion." |
| Q22 | E | But even if we had issues and wrote them down, do you think anyone reads them? I rather doubt it | Excerpt/Transcript Explanation: The transcript shows Ethan asking if anyone actually reads the forms when students write down their issues, and then saying that he does not think anyone does. Answer Explanation: The answer E means that Ethan believes people most likely do not read the evaluation forms. Reason For Correctness: The correct answer is E because Ethan expresses doubt that anyone actually looks at or reviews the forms. When discussing what to write, he asks if anyone reads them and immediately follows up with "I rather doubt it." Here, "doubt it" matches the meaning of "probably no one" in option E. |
| Q23 | B | There were lots of comments about this on the evaluation forms, and so Dr. Smith came and talked to us about it, and decided to add the individual evaluation forms so we could each evaluate our other group members' effort. That was a really important outcome | Excerpt/Transcript Explanation: The transcript shows Lily explaining that students' feedback on the forms caused their teacher, Dr. Smith, to introduce a new type of form so students could rate each other's work, which she describes as an important result. Answer Explanation: The answer B means that the evaluation forms caused useful and meaningful new rules or adjustments to happen. Reason For Correctness: The correct answer is B because Lily reminds Ethan that student comments on previous evaluation forms made a real difference. She explains that after students wrote about group members not doing fair work, Dr. Smith created individual evaluation forms to let students rate each other's efforts. Lily calls this "a really important outcome," which directly matches the idea that "important changes have been made because of the forms." |
| Q24 | 4 | Lily: Yeah. What do you think? Four | Excerpt/Transcript Explanation: The transcript shows Lily asking the group what score they should give and suggesting the number four as her first idea. Answer Explanation: The answer is the number 4. Reason For Correctness: The correct answer is 4 because when the group begins rating the project from one to five, Lily first asks the others what they think and initially suggests giving it a score of "Four". |
| Q25 | 5 | Joshua: Um Why four and not five? I don't really think there was much wrong with it. It was a good project |
Excerpt/Transcript Explanation: The transcript shows Joshua asking why they should not choose five instead of four because he thought the project was good and had very few flaws. Answer Explanation: The answer is the number 5, which is the score that Joshua initially suggests giving to the project on the rating scale. Reason For Correctness: The correct answer is 5 because when Lily suggests giving the project a score of four, Joshua questions her suggestion and asks why they should not give it a "five". He explains that he thought it was a good project without much wrong with it, making 5 his initial suggested rating. |
| Q26 | 4.5 | Ethan: I don't know. Why don't we give it a four point five | Excerpt/Transcript Explanation: The transcript shows Ethan asking why they do not give the project a score of 4.5. Answer Explanation: The answer is the number 4.5, which is the score suggested for the project. Reason For Correctness: The correct answer is 4.5 because Ethan suggests this rating when they are discussing what score to give the project. Lily suggested 4 and Joshua preferred 5, so Ethan suggested meeting in the middle with "a four point five". |
| Q27 | well thought out | Lily: So what about good points? Josh said it's well thought out; anything else | Excerpt/Transcript Explanation: The transcript shows Lily asking what good things they should write down, reminding the group that Joshua said the project was well thought out. Answer Explanation: The answer means that the project or its tasks were carefully planned and designed. Reason For Correctness: The correct answer is confirmed when the students discuss the positive aspects of the project. Lily asks about the "good points" and summarizes that Joshua described the project as "well thought out." Therefore, "well thought out" is the exact phrase representing Joshua's positive feedback. |
| Q28 | two topics | Lily: So what about good points? Josh said it's well thought out; anything else? Ethan: I liked having a choice between two topics | Excerpt/Transcript Explanation: The transcript shows Lily asking what good points they should write down, and Ethan replies that he appreciated being able to choose between two topics. Answer Explanation: The answer means having an option to choose from two different subjects. Reason For Correctness: The correct answer is "two topics" because when Lily asks the group for good points about the project, Ethan responds that he liked having a "choice between two topics". In the table under Ethan's good points, the text already says "choice between", so "two topics" completes the blank accurately. |
| Q29 | boring | Unfortunately I thought they were both boring | Excerpt/Transcript Explanation: The transcript shows Lily saying that she felt both of the topic choices were not interesting at all. Answer Explanation: The answer "boring" means not interesting or dull. Reason For Correctness: The correct answer is confirmed by Lily's comment when discussing the topic choices for the project. Ethan mentions that he liked having a choice between two topics, but Lily replies, "Unfortunately I thought they were both boring!". Therefore, under the bad points mentioned by Lily, the choices were both boring. |
| Q30 | more time | Joshua: No, I think it was a good project. Um If I had to say something I guess it would be the time scale. I think they should have given us more time to do this final project since it was a larger part of our grade |
Excerpt/Transcript Explanation: The transcript shows Joshua stating that the teachers or organizers should have provided additional time for the students to finish the final project. Answer Explanation: The answer "more time" means a longer period of time or extra days to finish their work. Reason For Correctness: The correct answer is "more time" because the table asks for Joshua's opinion on the "Bad Points" of the project. In the conversation, when Ethan asks Joshua if he has any complaints, Joshua responds that "they should have given us more time to do this final project". |
Transcript
Lily: Joshua! Ethan! Wait; don't leave yet. We have to fill in an evaluation form to hand in with our final project.
Ethan: Not another one! We've done one of these forms after each project all term! It's a bit of a waste of time, if you ask me.
Lily: They just want to give us a chance to have our say about the project.
Ethan: But I haven't much of an opinion about it either way. It's just a project.
Joshua: Yeah, but if you did?
Ethan: Then it wouldn't be a waste of time I suppose; what's your point?
Joshua: Just say you have no opinion; what's the problem with that?
Ethan: You're right; I'll do that. And it'll be easier than making something up! But even if we had issues and wrote them down, do you think anyone reads them? I rather doubt it.
Lily: Of course they do! Remember in the first term, when there were some problems with people in some groups not doing their fair share of the work? There were lots of comments about this on the evaluation forms, and so Dr. Smith came and talked to us about it, and decided to add the individual evaluation forms so we could each evaluate our other group members' effort. That was a really important outcome.
Joshua: See, Ethan, without the evaluation forms, we wouldn't have the opportunity to report what a slacker you are!
Ethan: Come on! I've done as much work as anyone!
Lily: Yeah, it's easy to joke around because we're a good team. My last team wasn't so good though, and I was really grateful for those forms.
Ethan: Ok - let's get it done so we can go.
Lily: Okay, first we have to rate the project from one to five, and comment on any good or bad points.
Joshua: We do this part together?
Lily: Yeah. What do you think? Four?
Ethan: Yeah, why not?
Joshua: Um... Why four and not five? I don't really think there was much wrong with it. It was a good project. The tasks were well thought out. Not like the last one where one of the tasks was impossible because there was no research on the subject.
Lily: I agree with you, Josh. There weren't technically any problems with the project. It's just that I like projects to have a sort of practical point, you know, we should see some sort of reason for doing it. Other than the grade, of course. If it had some sort of real-world application, it would have been perfect. What do you think Ethan?
Ethan: I don't know. Why don't we give it a four point five?
Lily: That's a good idea. Can we do that?
Joshua: I don't see why not. And I agree. Four point five.
Lily: So what about good points? Josh said it's well thought out; anything else?
Ethan: I liked having a choice between two topics. I mean, some topics just don't interest some people.
Lily: Yes, you're right. Unfortunately I thought they were both boring! I'm sounding a bit negative, aren't I? I can't think of any specific good points.
Ethan: That's alright. Let's move on to the bad points.
Lily: You're eager to go, aren't you?
Ethan: Yeah, I'm going camping tomorrow and I have to pack! But back to the topic. I haven't got an opinion about bad points; Lily's already said her share, what about you Joshua? Any complaints?
Joshua: No, I think it was a good project. Um... If I had to say something I guess it would be the time scale. I think they should have given us more time to do this final project since it was a larger part of our grade. But I don't think that's a big deal.
Lily: Ok. I think we're done. We just have to do the individual evaluation forms and that's it.
