Supermarket reviews

A Sharpsavers

Customers are impressed with this supermarket’s environmentally-friendly packaging as well as the attractive in-store cafes for customers. A wider range of goods has recently been introduced and there are also plans for online shopping facilities in the near future.

B Carltons

This is generally accepted as the best of all the supermarkets for value for money. Stock range isn’t as wide as in some other supermarkets, but this doesn’t appear to put customers off – in fact they say they’re happy that they don’t have to spend time making decisions on what brand to buy.

C TruCost

Customers like the regular discounts at this supermarket although the fruit and vegetables on sale are sometimes a bit past their best. A new app now allows customers to shop from any location, but a few setbacks have been reported when using this.

D Fressons

This supermarket is known for its local produce and customers also like the layout of its stores and the easy availability of parking, but checkout queuing times are a problem. Products also tend to be more expensive than in some other supermarkets, and some customers say they can’t afford to shop there regularly.

E ValuMart

This supermarket has relatively poor ratings for its in-store shopping, with complaints about inconvenient opening hours and many items being out of stock. However, customers are impressed with how straightforward the website is to use, and the availability of delivery slots.

F Greenbaums

This is overall the most popular supermarket with shoppers, who appreciate the wide range of products available and their excellent quality. The staff here are also extremely helpful, although other supermarkets may be more competitive in their pricing.

______________

Read the text below and answer Questions 9-14.

Getting a credit card

To qualify for a credit card you will need to give information about where you live and how much you earn. Before offering you a card, the card provider will do a credit check to investigate whether you have any history of outstanding debts. The amount it allows you to spend – your credit limit – will be based on this and your other circumstances. Credit limits tend to be modest to begin with but are often increased by banks over time. The card provider will also stipulate a minimum monthly repayment you need to make. You should avoid only paying the minimum your provider asks for each month, as interest has to be paid on outstanding balances.

Many cards have some form of insurance built into them, covering damage to goods purchased with the card or cancellation of a flight or holiday. This is free, but there are usually conditions attached so read the small print if you intend to rely on the cover. Bear in mind that you don’t have to pay the full amount on your card to get protection – the key thing is the price of the product you are buying. For example, if you’re buying a £500 flight, and pay £100 on your card and £400 in cash, your credit card will protect you for the full amount.

When choosing a card the easiest option is to go to your bank, but it may not offer the best deal for your circumstances. Instead you should consider how you will use the card and look for one that suits your needs. Store cards are usually available at the point of sale and can be used to make a purchase once a credit check and application form have been completed, which can take as little as 10 minutes. Retailers often offer incentives to sign up for their cards, which may include an introductory discount on goods. However, interest rates on these cards tend to be high. Affinity cards are credit cards with the logo of a charitable organisation on them. The charity will receive donations based on your spending. These don’t tend to add up to much, and if the card has an uncompetitive interest rate you may be better off choosing a cheaper card and making donations separately.

Answers & Explanations Summary

# Answer Evidence Explanation
Q1 F This is overall the most popular supermarket with shoppers, who appreciate the wide range of products available and their excellent quality Excerpt/Passage Explanation:
The passage explains that customers really like Greenbaums because it offers many different items and those items are made very well and are of great quality.
Answer Explanation:
The answer "F" refers to the supermarket called Greenbaums.
Reason For Correctness:
The correct answer is F because the text states that shoppers like the supermarket's products because of their "excellent quality." The phrase "items on sale" matches "products available," and having a "high standard" means having "excellent quality."
Q2 D checkout queuing times are a problem Excerpt/Passage Explanation:
The passage explains that waiting in line at the cash register to pay takes too long.
Answer Explanation:
The answer "D" means that Fressons is the supermarket where shoppers must wait in line for a long time before paying for their items.
Reason For Correctness:
The correct answer is D because the review for Fressons mentions that waiting to pay is an issue. In the text, the keyword "checkout" refers to the place where you pay, and "queuing times are a problem" means people have to wait in line for too long.
Q3 C the fruit and vegetables on sale are sometimes a bit past their best Excerpt/Passage Explanation:
The passage explains that the fruits and vegetables sold at TruCost are occasionally not as fresh as they could be.
Answer Explanation:
The answer C refers to TruCost supermarket.
Reason For Correctness:
The correct answer is C because the review for TruCost states that the fresh produce sold there is not always in top condition. In the text, "fruit and vegetables" refers to the "food", and the phrase "sometimes a bit past their best" means that it is "not always very fresh".
Q4 B This is generally accepted as the best of all the supermarkets for value for money Excerpt/Passage Explanation:
The passage states that most people agree Carltons is the top supermarket when it comes to getting good quality and quantity for the money you pay.
Answer Explanation:
The answer "B" refers to Carltons supermarket.
Reason For Correctness:
The correct answer is B because the passage states that Carltons is considered the best supermarket for "value for money". In English, the phrase "value for money" means that the items you buy are worth what you pay for them, which directly matches the idea that "the products bought are well worth the price."
Q5 A A wider range of goods has recently been introduced Excerpt/Passage Explanation:
The passage explains that the store recently brought in a bigger selection of items for shoppers to buy.
Answer Explanation:
The answer 'A' means that the supermarket Sharpsavers now sells more different types of items than it did before.
Reason For Correctness:
The correct answer is A because section A states that this supermarket recently started offering more types of items. In this section, the phrase 'wider range' means 'greater variety', 'goods' means 'products', and 'has recently been introduced' means they are now available.
Q6 B Stock range isn’t as wide as in some other supermarkets, but this doesn’t appear to put customers off – in fact they say they’re happy that they don’t have to spend time making decisions on what brand to buy Excerpt/Passage Explanation:
The passage explains that Carltons has fewer different products than other shops, but buyers are pleased because it saves them time when deciding what to buy.
Answer Explanation:
The answer B means that supermarket Carltons is the store where having fewer items to choose from is actually a good thing for shoppers.
Reason For Correctness:
The correct answer is B because the review for Carltons explains that the store's stock range is not as wide as other places, meaning there is a "limited choice." However, shoppers are pleased with this because they do not have to waste time choosing which brand to purchase, which shows it is an "advantage."
Q7 E However, customers are impressed with how straightforward the website is to use, and the availability of delivery slots Excerpt/Passage Explanation:
The passage explains that shoppers are very pleased with how simple and clear the supermarket's website is when they shop on it, and that they can easily find times to have their shopping delivered.
Answer Explanation:
The answer "E" refers to the supermarket ValuMart.
Reason For Correctness:
The correct answer is E because paragraph E states that shoppers like how "straightforward" the website is to use and that delivery times are easily available. The word "straightforward" is a synonym for "easy", and using a website to book delivery slots means ordering goods online.
Q8 F The staff here are also extremely helpful Excerpt/Passage Explanation:
The passage explains that the workers at this store give very good assistance to customers.
Answer Explanation:
The answer "F" means that Greenbaums is the supermarket where shoppers say good things about the workers who assist them.
Reason For Correctness:
The correct answer is F because paragraph F states that the workers at Greenbaums are "extremely helpful." Here, the word "staff" means "employees," and describing them as "extremely helpful" matches the idea that customers "praise the service provided."
Q9 FALSE You should avoid only paying the minimum your provider asks for each month, as interest has to be paid on outstanding balances Excerpt/Passage Explanation:
The passage means that you should not pay just the lowest possible amount each month, because you will have to pay extra money (interest) on the rest of the unpaid balance.
Answer Explanation:
The answer FALSE means that the statement is not true according to the text.
Reason For Correctness:
The correct answer is FALSE because the passage explicitly tells readers that they should not pay only the smallest required amount. The text uses the phrase "You should avoid only paying the minimum", which directly contradicts the idea that doing so "may be a good idea". The word "avoid" means to stay away from doing something or to not do it.
Q10 NOT GIVEN Many cards have some form of insurance built into them, covering damage to goods purchased with the card or cancellation of a flight or holiday Excerpt/Passage Explanation:
The passage explains that credit cards often include protection for broken items or cancelled flights, but it does not say anything about getting insurance in case your card is lost.
Answer Explanation:
The answer "NOT GIVEN" means that the text does not say whether you should get insurance for losing your card.
Reason For Correctness:
The correct answer is NOT GIVEN because the passage only mentions free built-in insurance that covers damaged items or cancelled trips. It never mentions losing your card or whether you need to buy insurance for a lost card. Because this advice is completely missing from the text, the statement cannot be confirmed as true or false.
Q11 TRUE This is free, but there are usually conditions attached so read the small print if you intend to rely on the cover Excerpt/Passage Explanation:
The passage explains that credit card insurance does not cost money, but there are special rules and limits ("conditions attached"), so you must read the detailed text ("small print") if you plan to use this protection.
Answer Explanation:
The answer "TRUE" means that the information in the statement matches what is written in the text.
Reason For Correctness:
The correct answer is TRUE because the passage says that credit card insurance usually has rules or limits, and you should check them. In the text, the phrase "read the small print" means you should make yourself aware or carefully check the details, and "conditions attached" refers to restrictions. Furthermore, relying on the "cover" means making an insurance claim when something goes wrong.
Q12 FALSE Bear in mind that you don’t have to pay the full amount on your card to get protection – the key thing is the price of the product you are buying. For example, if you’re buying a £500 flight, and pay £100 on your card and £400 in cash, your credit card will protect you for the full amount Excerpt/Passage Explanation:
The passage explains that you do not have to pay the entire bill using your credit card to be covered. Even if you only pay a small part of the price on the card, the card still covers the entire cost of the item or flight.
Answer Explanation:
The answer FALSE means that the statement is incorrect according to the text.
Reason For Correctness:
The correct answer is FALSE because the text directly states that you do not need to pay the whole price with your card to get protection. Even if you only pay part of the price with your credit card and the rest with cash, the credit card will still protect you for the full cost. Therefore, the statement that you "can only claim insurance for the full cost... if you paid for it all on your credit card" contradicts the passage.
Q13 NOT GIVEN When choosing a card the easiest option is to go to your bank, but it may not offer the best deal for your circumstances Excerpt/Passage Explanation:
The passage explains that asking your own bank for a credit card is the simplest choice, but it might not be the best deal. It does not say anything about bank cards being safer or offering more protection.
Answer Explanation:
The answer "NOT GIVEN" means that the text does not give us enough information to know if a bank's credit card gives you more security or safety than cards from other providers.
Reason For Correctness:
The correct answer is NOT GIVEN because the passage never compares the security or safety of bank cards with cards from other companies. The text mentions that visiting your bank is the "easiest option" when choosing a card, but it does not discuss or compare the level of security between different card providers.
Q14 TRUE Store cards are usually available at the point of sale and can be used to make a purchase once a credit check and application form have been completed, which can take as little as 10 minutes Excerpt/Passage Explanation:
The passage explains that store cards can be obtained right where you pay in the shop, and applying and getting approved can take only about ten minutes.
Answer Explanation:
The answer "TRUE" means that the information in the statement matches what the text says.
Reason For Correctness:
The correct answer is TRUE because the text explains that store cards are typically offered right at the checkout counter ("at the point of sale") and the whole process to get and use one can take "as little as 10 minutes". This matches the statement's claim that you can generally obtain the card very quickly while inside the shop.
