  1. Dziand Dafi & Shalihah Nurhaliza says:

The chart illustrates the proportions of the population in four Southeast Asian countries living in urban areas over the past five decades, from 1970 to 2020, as well as the forecasted percentages for 2030 and 2040.

Overall, it can be seen that living in cities in all four countries gained popularity over time.

The growth of urban residents in Malaysia and Indonesia showed a similar trend from 1970 to 2020. In 1970, 30% of Malaysia’s citizens lived in cities, whereas only around 12% of Indonesians stayed in cities. For both countries, the proportion of urban residents rose at almost the same rate and by a similar amount, around 30%, by 2020, compared to 1970. These figures are predicted to continue their rise to around 85% for Malaysia and around 65% for Indonesia.

For the other two countries, Thailand and the Philippines, the increase in the percentage of people residing in cities was less significant. While the percentage of people living in cities in Thailand initially surpassed that of Indonesia in 1970, the figure only increased by around 10% to 30% in 2020. The same goes for the Philippines, where in 2020, people living in cities only accounted for around 40% of the population, only 10% higher than that recorded in 1970. With regard to the future, although the popularity of living in urban areas is forecasted to increase for both countries, the percentages are predicted to still be lower than those for Malaysia and Indonesia.

The percentage of the total population in both Malaysia and Indonesia soared dramatically until 2020, while the percentage in Thailand steadily increased. The percentage of the total population is predicted to grow in all four states until the end of the period.

The ratio of city dwellers in the Philippines increased from nearly 30 percent to just below 50 percent between 1970 and 1990, then decreased to just above 40 percent until 2010. The percentage of the urban population plummeted from 30 percent to nearly 75 percent in Malaysia throughout the period from 1970 to 2020. Similarly, the percentage of city dwellers increased sharply from nearly 15 percent to around 50 percent in Indonesia in the 50 years from 1970. Finally, the ratio of the urban population in Thailand steadily increased from just below 20 percent to just above 30 percent in five decades from 1970.

The percentage of the total population is predicted to increase until 2040 in all four states, reaching almost 80 percent, 60 percent, just above 50 percent, and just below 50 percent in Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Thailand, respectively.
