Band 7+: an unusual meal you had

For many people, something unusual can be simply a foreign food that they’ve tried. As a word is becoming more and more globalized, we can see people moving around from all around the globe, starting small businesses and especially restaurants. So foreign food has become a bit common these days. Something truly unusual that I’ve tried is a really popular restaurant food in China this day, frog hot pot. Ever heard of other nations eating frogs? Of course, as I come from Europe, we often times talk about the French eating this animal. But before coming to China, I never even imagined that I’d eat it and even enjoy it a lot. I always had this outgoing and open-minded attitude towards food in general and I’ve always been open to trying new things as long as they don’t look disgusting. Because disgusting is based on a personal opinion and every person will have a different level of tolerance. Anyway, I came to China and in one of the first months, a new Chinese friend of mine took me out for a meal and to a surprise, he asked me if I’d like to eat a frog hot pot. He mentioned that it’s really delicious and I’d be surprised by how good it is. I reluctantly agreed and we went to try it. It was basically, or you can imagine, a big pot, half full with a spicy flavor soup mixed with various vegetables and obviously frog pieces. At first glance, it didn’t even look like frogs. I saw a word chopped well and cooked enough to look like ordinary meat pieces so I took a bite and to my surprise, it was pretty good. In fact, it was awesome. Well, it is definitely unusual and weird as many people would simply refuse the thought of eating frog. I would try many other things that can be considered strange but the frog hot pot stand out for sure. I believe these three-year-old types are due to cultural differences and available food and we never had and never experienced that in my experience. We’ll see it as something horrible while for others it’ll be just amazing.
