Advertisements are an indispensable part of marketing and promoting a product. They're becoming increasingly prevalent because they're a major part of promoting something to society nowadays. Advertisements are delivered through various mediums like social media, newspapers, magazines, and television channels. Today, I'm going to describe an advertisement from my childhood that conveyed a harmful message to society. It was an ad for a fairness cream brand called Fair & Lovely. The advertisement depicted a girl who was deeply concerned about her dark skin and felt very sad. She desperately wanted to look like her fair-skinned sister. She tried numerous methods and herbal remedies, but nothing seemed to work. She was very disappointed. Her sister then revealed the secret to her beauty – she was using a fairness cream. The girl started using the same cream and experienced a dramatic change in her skin tone. The problematic message conveyed by this ad was that having fair skin is the epitome of beauty. This could instill a harmful belief in children that they need to have light or fair skin to be considered beautiful. It made me feel very sad because it perpetuated the idea that darker skin is somehow inferior.
