I would like to describe a foreign culture that I am interested in. The culture is actually about marriage. In my culture, when you are married to a man, the white weapon normally is organized by the groom’s parents and the Indian town. But in Yoruba land, the marriage that is a white weapon is organized and held in the woman’s place. They believe that it is the woman that owns the marriage so everything should be done in their area. So the one I witnessed is the one with my sister-in-law that I married to a Yoruba man. So they came down for the traditional wedding in the bright place which is normally what we do. Then during the white wedding also, they came, many of them, they stayed for days. And during the custom, they would eat, they would have some, thanks, no, three times people sort of party. Then on the wedding day also, after the church wedding, they would gather in the hall after attending to all the people that attended. Then they would also have a small gathering where they display some culture, traditional rags. And then they would also dance. That’s this one, they’re dancing normally in the hood during the white wedding. So symbolizing that it’s the woman that owns the house, the marriage is mainly for her to take care of the husband and the incoming children. And to tell her that she’s welcomed in the house and now that she’s a full-fledged member of that family. And she should relax and do what is needful, that is in the sense of taking care of everybody that she’s welcomed. No, she’s expected not to start behaving as a visitor. But this, because in that tradition also, they give her a key, meaning that she’s now a part of them.
