My parents, two younger brothers and I travelled by train from Mombasa to Nairobi, a journey that took almost a whole day. I can still recall the excitement I felt as the train passed through endless safanas, landscapes, small towns and bam trees swaying in the breeze. My mother had packed homemade snacks and we shared them while peering out of the window. My father kept pointing out interesting landmarks along the way and my brothers and I competed to spot white light. We even saw giraffes and sepras in the distance. When we finally arrived in Mombasa, the warm, solid breeze from the Indian Ocean hit my face and I knew we were somewhere magical. The highlight was visiting the Anipige, the soft white sand that took away waters and the sound of waves rolling in made me feel like I was in a postcard. We also explored for Jesus and enjoyed fresh seafood at local markets. This trip is memorable to me because it was my first real adventure outside my hometown. It opened my eyes to the beauty and the capacity of my own country and it strengthened the bond with my family. Even today whenever I smell the ocean of 4 air seagulls I am instantly transported back that incredible time.
