I remember scrolling through my social media feed a couple of months ago, probably on a lazy Sunday afternoon, when I came across a viral post claiming that drinking lemon water first thing in the morning could cure almost anything, from cancer to chronic fatigue. It was shared by a health influencer with thousands of followers, and the headline was so sensational that it immediately caught my eye. The post went into detail about how lemon water alkalizes the body and boosts the immune system to a point where it could eliminate tumors and resolve autoimmune diseases. It even cited some studies but without any links or references. As someone who has a background in biology, I found it highly suspicious because no single drink can have miraculous effects, and scientific evidence for an alkaline diet is practically nonexistent. The lack of credible sources and the overly exaggerated claims made me instantly doubt its validity. I thought it was not true primarily because it contradicted basic medical knowledge and the way the human body controls its pH levels. It's a tightly controlled system that lemon water can't drastically alter. Moreover, the post seemed designed to trigger an emotional response rather than provide beneficial information, which is a classic hallmark of misleading information. Honestly, I felt a mix of frustration and concern—frustration because such misleading content can lead people to abandon proven treatments or rely on unverified claims. On a personal level, it also made me more cautious about what I read online and reinforced my habit of fact-checking.
