One of the most interesting wild animals in Vietnam is the elephant. The elephant is one of the largest land animals. Known for its massive body, thick and wrinkled gray skin, large and fan-shaped ears, and long trunk, which they use for smelling, eating, and breathing while in water. Elephants are herbivores, so their diet consists of vegetation, like grasses, small plants, various fruits, tree bark, and roots. Vietnam has a small population of elephants, which mainly reside in the jungles of our highland region, and sometimes near rivers. Elephants are mostly found in the central and northern regions. The Vietnamese have a rather complicated relationship with elephants. They are often seen as symbols of power, wisdom, and loyalty. Our culture admires them for their intelligence and gentle temperament. And festivals are held in their honor. Sadly, the elephant population has declined due to habitat loss, poaching, and other human activities like logging. But thankfully, nowadays, people are increasingly becoming protective of elephants, understanding the need to preserve these magnificent creatures for future generations. By banning elephant riding tours and other exploitative elephant-related services, hopefully, these efforts will save the remaining elephants in Vietnam.
