That is the time when President Ko Shining read the Declaration of Independence, establishing the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. History lessons at school in Vietnam might be very boring and not many students pay attention to their teacher’s words in those lessons, but I can assure you that there is one thing about history that every student in Vietnam remembers. That is the date of the day marking our freedom. September 2nd, 1945 was a very glorious day when thousands of people gathered at the Bà Di Square to listen to the Declaration of Independence and to celebrate the victory in taking back our freedom and peace. You know, in the past, our country were invaded and colonized for a very long time by multiple countries, but we succeeded in keeping our traditions and customs while trying our best to fight the enemies and to reclaim our independence and territory. Friends colonized us for almost 100 years, feasting on our people’s blood and sweat. However, most Vietnamese back then were farmers, they were uneducated, so therefore they had to bow to their inhumane landlords. Despite the great disadvantages like poverty, starvation and diseases, they were still able to unite and fight for the freedom.
