The person that inspires me to get up and go would be Dr. Zahra Asan. She is a molecular pathologist who works as a consultant at Agha Khan University Hospital and in the Department of Clinical Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. She completed her BSc Honours in biochemistry from Imperial College London and went on to get a PhD in molecular microbiology from St. Mary's Medical School, which is also affiliated with Imperial College, in 1993. What I love about her is how progressive she is. For a woman to get a PhD, especially from a South Asian country and in the 90s from Europe, was a very big deal. She was also one of the first scientists who introduced the COVID vaccine for the Pakistan strain and was among the group of scientists who elucidated the mechanistic differences between the Wuhan strain and the Pakistan strain of COVID-19. Apart from this, she is one of the two molecular pathologists in Pakistan who do not have a medical training background but have a BSc Honours, a master's, and a PhD in molecular pathology or biochemistry. I also love her work; I try to attend her workshops and lectures. She came to my Shalemar Medical College and gave a lecture on PCR diagnostics. Before that, I only knew about PCRs for diagnosing different viruses, but she explained many different applications of PCR, such as forensic DNA fingerprinting, infectious disease diagnostics, cancer diagnostics, and cardiac markers. She showed how PCRs could be calibrated to diagnose different diseases, and it was awesome.
