I believe our cultural values and beliefs have an influence to how we perceive success and fulfillment in our lives. How we were brought up by our parents would definitely affect how we perceive life as well. For example, here in the Philippines, when you finish school, when you graduate college, it’s very important that you give back to your parents. It’s not through money but through your efforts by providing for them or even providing for your entire family. And many Filipinos would choose to do that instead of rewarding themselves for the efforts that they have given throughout their education life. So with that culture, with that belief being engraved on us, our perception of success would always depend on how we are able to provide for our families and make them happy and make our parents proud. That’s our perception of success. That’s our culture. But in certain countries like more westernized beliefs, it’s more on freedom, it’s more on living life independently. That’s how they perceive success in their culture.
