Yeah, this has always been a problem, if we consider the 1950s. Nowadays, it's not beneficial to choose scientific subjects for earning potential because there aren't many financial resources available. There will be no aid from the country to help you; you just do it for your own hobby if you really have a passion for it. I think this is the main reason most students are choosing finance or something technical like business instead of science subjects. Also, science subjects can be boring for, how to say, standard or normal students. Science is something that doesn't appeal to everyone. And how will it affect our society? I think that only those blessed with a great mind will choose to contribute to society in any way, even if the country does not support them. They will do it because they love it and because they can. I don't think it will have a significant effect on society.
