Overall, there has been a significant chnage in spending pattern, with expenditure on cars becoming the majority expense in 2000 and a large decline in expenditure on petrol and restaurants. Along with these changes, the year 2000 also showed an emergence of new categories such as computers and food.
In 1975, the highest expenditure was on petrol with 36% followed by furniture at 32%. Restaurants too were a significant category at 25% leaving computers at a mere 7%.
In contrast, in 2000 the spending habits became more diversified due to addition of new categories such as food and cars. Cars accounted for the largest portion at 43%, followed by restaurants and food each at 14%. While the spending on computers increased to 12%, petrol and furniture showed a sharp drop to 8% each.
