The line graph illustrates trends in the use of the internet for different purposes over a 15-year period, measured as percentages.
Overall, the figure for downloading films is projected to undergo a notable downward trajectory and become least popular online activity from around 2021 onwards. On the other hand, the opposite trend is predicted for the remaining three purposes, with shopping anticipated to overtake the others to become the dominant internet activity by 2030.
In 2015, the proportion of people using the internet for downloading films stood at roughly 72%, occupying the second position among the surveyed methods. It then declined sharply over the following years and is set to hit a low of just around 47% by 2030.
In contrast, all other three categories are estimated to witness upward trends. Despite starting at the highest point, the figure for sending emails is set to see a more gradual increase, rising from around 80% in 2015 to nearly 90% by 2030. Meanwhile, shopping and studying online courses are projected to grow significantly, climbing from their initial lows of approximately 40% and 38% respectively in 2015 to just under 96% and 79% respectively by 2030. Consequently, online shopping is likely to become the most common purpose of the four options by the end of the period.
