The two maps depict changes and developments to a seaside area called Felixstone over a 34-year period, from 1967 to 2001.
Overall, the region used to be a holiday settlement, but over the years, the infrastructure and amenities were increased, improving the region’s capacity to accommodate both permanent residents and tourists.
In 1967, there had been an unspoilt farmland in the northeast, which was dug up and supplanted by a new hotel, along with two tennis courts and a swimming pool. To the west of the hotel, there used to be a high street, with two rows of shops on the sides. By 2001, one of the rows had been replaced by housing estate. The other row was extended to allow room for more shops.
In the northwest, there was a golf course which had stood on this site since 1967, providing the habitants and travelers with a third athletic facility other than the swimming pool and the tennis courts in 2001. Another major change in terms of tourism was the renovation of the other hotel as well as the addition of a car park next to it in the southwest. There was a café next to the hotel which did not undergo any changes, but all the other municipal services in the beach area, namely the fish market, Marina, and the pier were knocked down, in order to divide the beach into a public and a private section.
