The bar chart illustrates the average prices per kilometre of clothing imported into the European Union from six countries, Argentina, Brazil, Japan, China, India, and Bangladesh in 1993 and 2003.
Overall, it can be seen that Argentina and Brazil recorded the highest prices in both years, whereas Bangladesh had the lowest. In addition, while prices generally declined in most countries over the ten-year period, China and Bangladesh showed a noticeable increase.
In 1993, Argentina had the highest average price at nearly £28 per kilometre, followed closely by Brazil at around £23. By 2003, these figures had decreased slightly to about £25 and £22, respectively. Japan also experienced a decline, from roughly £12 to £10 per kilometre.
By contrast, China’s prices rose from just under £8 in 1993 to around £15 in 2003, overtaking Japan. A similar upward trend was observed in India and Bangladesh. India’s prices increased from about £7 to £11, while Bangladesh, though still the lowest among all countries, nearly doubled from around £4 to £7.
In summary, although Argentina and Brazil remained the most expensive sources of clothing imports into the EU, their prices dropped over the decade, while lower-cost countries, particularly China and Bangladesh, saw rising prices between 1993 and 2003.
